About Us

Since 1912, the Shinnston High School Alumni Association, Inc., has been sponsoring reunions, dances, banquets and other social activities for the alumni of Shinnston High School. If you are a graduate of or ever attended SHS, you're invited to join our organization.

If you graduated from or attended Lincoln High School, you may be interested in joining the Lincoln High School Alumni. Click here to visit their website.

The association sponsors a reunion for all classes every four years. The next all-classes reunion will take place in July, 2012. The group meets monthly during reunion years and twice a year on off-years.

History of Shinnston High School Alumni Association, Inc.

Founded Dec. 28, 1912, the Alumni Association's objective has always been to bring alumni together to rekindle old friendships from high school days. The group was originally called Clay District High School Alumni Association.

The first president of the organization was Edgar J. Harmer; Esther Lowe served as secretary/treasurer. The first Alumni Banquet was held on May 24, 1913; 25 graduates of Clay District High School attended.

The group was active during the 1950s and held several dances, some of which were held at Melody Manor in Fairmont. In later years, interest in the organization waned and it became inactive.

In 1976, 10 interested alumni joined together to reform the association. Officers elected at that initial meeting were: Edward Joseph, President; Wanda Ashcraft, Vice President; Natalie Vincent, Secretary; and Judy Asel, Treasurer. Asel resigned her position in 1977, and Shirla Richardson took her place as Treasurer.

Each of the 10 original members contributed $5 to start
the Bicentennial Celebration, held on Aug. 21, 1976.

SHS Alumni Association Meeting

May 10, 2010

Members in attendance:

Debbie Malone, Danny Malone, Pam May, Tim Paushel, Jody Bice, Mickey Paugh, Mary Spadafore, Norma Thompson and Starla Daniels.

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President, Debbie Malone. There were no minutes from the previous meeting. We did review the Treasurer’s Report. Motion was made by Norma Thompson to accept the report and was seconded by Mary Spadafore.

Old Business:

There was some discussion about the dinner held for Lee Martin and all said that it went very well and he seemed very pleased.

Debbie stated that someone from the museum board was supposed to be at the meeting to discuss insurance on the Alumni Room but did not attend. It is assumed that the museum’s insurance will cover, but we will have to check on it to make sure. Debbie said she will get a representative from WesBanco to come to another meeting about the insurance.

By-laws – Steve Glass is working on them. We need to determine what we should do with the money in our treasury when the group is eventually disbanded in about 20 years.

New Business:

Alumni Room – Debbie Malone wanted to thank all who helped move the artifacts from the library to the museum. There was some discussion on a chair lift for stairs that lead up to the Alumni Room to satisfy the ADA requirements. The museum will not put in an elevator due to the high cost. They want us to pay $3800 for the installation of the chair lift. Lion’s Club will donate $500 toward it, but the Garden Club will not donate anything to it. There was much discussion on whether or not the Alumni Association should be responsible for paying the entire cost. Woody Maley had originally said we could give a donation. All members feel that we need a written contract and Pam May suggested that we wait until the museum has its next meeting so we can bring it up to them because members feel we have too many questions to make a decision now.

Debbie also stated that the museum would like to have someone volunteer on weekends to be at the Alumni Room. All members said no to that and we should keep things the way they are now. If someone wishes to see it, they will call Debbie to set an appointment.

Maxine West of the museum paid the city workers for lunch for helping with the move, and Debbie said they did a wonderful job. Mickey Paugh made a motion that we reimburse the museum for this cost, and Starla Daniels seconded it. All were in favor.

Harriet Harmer’s family donated all of her yearbooks. After discussing the Senior Awards plaques presented by the American Legion, the group was in agreement that we give them back to the American Legion.

Debbie said that Maxine West suggested that we put a sign at the top of the stairs that says “Spartan Country.” Dannie Malone has volunteered to make the sign and all members were in agreement for him to go ahead with that project.

Members have been researching companies for costs on a new Spartan costume. Debbie passed out brochures and prices from the Elusive Skull. Total for costume and accessories would be $130. Pam said it would cost more than that to have one made but would go to Huntington to check on another costume company and get back to us with prices before we make any decisions.

Debbie mentioned that we need to purchase a few tables for the Alumni Room. The Baptist Church is donating some chairs to us. Mary suggested we wait until we see what those chairs are like before a purchase any tables. She also said that Deloris Baker is having new banners made for the next reunion. There was some discussion on how to hang uniforms. Pam May is working on the electronic inventory. Debbie had class pictures copied at MCM – they copied all from 46 through 78 by mistake so we didn’t have to pay for them. So we have them and can decide what we want to do with them.  Pictures of the classes of 1942, 1966 & 1970 are not available, but the originals are owned by John Belcastro. We are hoping that he will donate them to the Alumni Association.

Debbie also mentioned that we need to check on the cost of a fireproof safe.

There was discussion on sending postcards to members about the new alumni room and then asking for suggestions on the upcoming reunion. Pam May made a motion that we do that and it was seconded by Dannie Malone. All were in favor.

Next All Classes ReunionPam May suggested we do a Poker Run. We talked about changing the parade to Friday, asking members to think about bands for the dance and having a picnic in the park. The City of Shinnston is selling license plates to put up in the City Park at the Bocce Court. All members were in agreement to purchase one at $100 to show our support.

Norman Thompson volunteered to keep track of members who have passed away and Mickey Paugh agreed to help her and report back to Debbie Malone.

Mickey Paugh made a motion that the President can spend up to $2000 without calling a meeting. This was seconded by Norma Thompson.

It was decided to set up the next meeting on the same night at the museum’s board meeting so that we can talk with them about concerns. The date for this meeting is June 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Alumni Room at the museum.

Pam May made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 7:45 p.m. and it was seconded by Mickey Paugh. Some of the members walked to the Alumni Room to see it with the new artifacts in it.
